I did a special project for Jen and Colin’s wedding after seeing how many classic frames they had, and to show what it’s like for me to get through an entire edit. You can see all the images straight from the camera into this short video here

Colorado with Evolv Japan
Earlier this summer I had the opportunity to document the Japanese climber Dai Koyamada on his first trip to the U.S to check out some boulders. Young ace Miwa Oba was also along for the trip as well as my longtime friend Kiyoshi Yoshida. We met up in Salt Lake City and went to Colorado to do some alpine recon. Here are some moments from the time we spent together.
Marine Homecoming
Through my volunteer work with the Yellow Ribbon Photographers, I was on hand to shoot a homecoming last week at Camp Pendleton.
This one really hit home, seeing all the last-minute anticipation and nervousness for the moment many families are reunited. No matter how many times you imagine the end of a deployment, there is nothing like the moment it happens. After months of waiting, everything seems to pass by in a blur. I was honored to be asked to capture these moments for this couple. Welcome home, 2/11 Marines.
Alejandro + Nancy
San Jose, California
Several of Alejandro and Nancy’s friends declared their wedding the best they’d ever attended. The wedding party definitely had never before participated in the likes of this Chinese and Mexican celebration which was one part tea ceremony and Catholic mass, one part door games and dollar dance. If you’re not familiar with Chinese door games, I’ll just say that the girls made it extremely difficult for Alejandro to collect his bride on the morning of the wedding. They demanded he profess his love through feats of strength, heartfelt singing (after some lyric-googling), eating sushi rolls consisting of only wasabi wrapped in rice, and a few rounds of pass-the-seaweed-with-your-mouth, all which he and his groomsmen took on like a champ before they were allowed entry. The ceremony was beautiful, and the party was one for the history books.
For this wedding I was delighted to have Natalie Eidelman on board as a second shooter, on loan from the Chrisman Studios. Her images are gorgeous and you’ll see some of them below.
Behind the Scenes with WilderBe
Time for a little star break!
I recently got to spend some time backstage with the Nova Han’s new group, Wilderbe. They are only a few weeks old but once they hit the scene, they are going to be breathtaking. Created by Nova, one of the founding members the Lucent Dossier Experience, this interactive group uses 3D video mapping technology projections that respond to their bodies and movement in real time. It’s pretty awesome, and it was a challenge for me to even attempt to do justice to the quality of the light projection. I don’t think I managed to, so until then, maybe you’ll just have to take my word for it as one of those things you’ll have to see in person. The finished project is going to be an ultimate culmination in skill–gorgeous costuming, production, tight dance and innovative visuals.
Stunt Van
Actress Vanessa Vander Pluym stopped by the studio recently for a series of portraits. You can see her right now as the host of the Speed Channel’s show, “Stuntbusters,” and she’s got quite a list of accomplishments to date. As a young rhythmic gymnast, Van was on the U.S national team and has since then also become trained in many other disciplines of martial arts, acting, stunts, and also picked up a degree in engineering @UCLA along the way…but the best thing is that she’s fun to work with and her infectious laugh cracks me up.
Linh and Tao
Linh and Tao were the picture of grace. Several hundred pictures, actually, as they were required to pose for the requisite family portraits that comes with doing a traditional tea ceremony and banquet complete with greeting guests at the door and wardrobe changes. I look back at their wedding with fondness at the ease of which they navigated the day. Smiles, easygoing, with the confidence and contributions from both families.
My second shooter was Marc Campos who did a fabulous job. I was also VERY impressed by their MC, who was DJ Wasabi from AM1430. She’s flawless and charismatic in three languages and if you’re looking for cantonese, english and mandarin at your wedding, look no further.
